The hours and minutes registers are in fact holding registers (See Figure 8-3).
When setting the RTC time, the hours and minutes are written rst, then writing to
the seconds register will cause the hours and minutes in their holding registers to
be latched into the RTC hardware.
When reading the RTC time, the seconds register is rst accessed; this will cause
the hardware to latch the hours and minutes into their respective holding registers.
Now, reading the hours and minutes registers will give the time for the moment
when the seconds register was read.
