Conexant Proprietary Information
Communication
The RipTide system supports a 1-line Conexant V.90/K56flex 56 kbps modem with SoftK56 host MMX-based signal
processing. Host software performs processing of general modem control, command sets, fax EIA/TIA-578 Class 1 and T.31
Class 1.0, voice, speakerphone, digital speakerphone over the internet, error correction, data compression, and operating
system interface functions. These functions, along with dialing, call progress, and telephone line interface are supported and
controlled through the AT command set. Modem functions operate with PSTN telephone lines in the U.S. and world-wide.
MMX-Based Signal Processing Modem Software (SoftK56 Architecture)
Modem controller functionality is provided by software similar to the Conexant SoftK56 V.90/K56flex Modem and modem
signal processing is performed in MMX-based software.
Modem Controller Software. Modem controller VxDs are loaded dynamically as required depending upon communications
mode, e.g., V.90, K56flex, or V.34. By treating functionality as discrete objects, modem control features can easily be revised
or updated without affecting the functionality of the rest of the modem. Communication modes are controlled and processed
in response to V.25 ter and other AT-style commands and S parameters as defined in the SoftK56 Command Reference
Manual (Order No. 1163).
MMX-Based Signal Processing and Hardware Driver Software. The heart of the SoftK56 specific code is the Modem
Engine/Data Pump layer and Hardware Driver.
The SoftK56 Modem Engine includes Advanced Modem Operations Scheduler (AMOS) which is Conexant’s state-of-the-art
system software architecture. The software scheduler core dynamic loads signal processing VxDs on an as-needed basis
depending on communication mode thus optimizing the system RAM utilization. Incremental value-added functionality is
easily implemented as a new “ signal processing object” without extensive system retest, simply by installing an additional
VxD driver. In addition, remote troubleshooting is enabled using simple application utilities written around Conexant’s
exclusive modem monitoring engine.
The Data Pump code layer provides the data and fax modulation protocol code to process the data samples delivered by the
Codec hardware. Advanced algorithmic techniques overcome most common PC system limitations, including interrupt latency
and bus latency. The design is tolerant to interrupt latencies exceeding 20 milliseconds while utilizing less than 50 MHz of
CPU capacity.
Codec hardware driver functions are performed in software.
Modem Features
V.90 and K56flex Data Modes
As a V.90/K56flex
data modem, the modem can receive data from a digital source using a V.90 or K56flex-compatible
central site modem over the digital telephone network portion of the PSTN at line speeds up to 56 kbps. Asymmetrical data
transmission supports sending data up to V.34 rates. This mode can fallback to full-duplex V.34 mode, and to slower rates as
supported by line conditions.
As a V.34 data modem, the modem can also operate in 2-wire, full-duplex, asynchronous mode at line rates up to 33600 bps.
Data modem modes perform complete handshake and data rate negotiations. Using V.34 modulation to optimize modem
configuration for line conditions, the modem can connect at the highest data rate that the channel can support from 33600
bps to 2400 bps with automatic fallback. Automode operation from V.90, V.34, and V.32 bis is provided. All tone and pattern
detection functions required by the applicable ITU or Bell standard are supported.
Fax Mode
In fax modem mode, the modem can operate in 2-wire, half-duplex, synchronous mode and can support Group 3 facsimile
send and receive speeds of 14400, 12000, 9600, 7200, 4800, or 2400 bps. Fax data transmission and reception performed
by the modem are controlled and monitored through the fax EIA/IA-578 Class 1 and T.31 Class 1.0 command interface. Full
HDLC formatting, zero insertion/deletion, and CRC generation/checking are provided.
