USB Inrush Limiting
VoltageovershootonVBUSmaysometimesbeobserved
whenconnectingtheLTC4099toalabpowersupply.This
overshootiscausedbylongleadsfromthepowersupply
toVBUS.Twistingthewirestogetherfromthesupplyto
VBUScangreatlyreducetheparasiticinductanceofthese
longleads,andkeepthevoltageatVBUStosafelevels.USB
cablesaregenerallymanufacturedwiththepowerleadsin
closeproximity,andthusfairlylowparasiticinductance.
Board Layout Considerations
TheExposedPadonthebacksideoftheLTC4099package
mustbesecurelysolderedtothePCboardground.This
istheprimarygroundpininthepackage,anditserves
asthereturnpathforboththecontrolcircuitryandthe
synchronousrectifier.
Furthermore, due to its high frequency switching
circuitry,itisimperativethattheinputcapacitor,inductor,
andoutputcapacitorbeasclosetotheLTC4099aspos-
sible,andthattherebean
unbrokengroundplaneunder
theLTC4099andallofitsexternalhighfrequencycompo-
nents.Highfrequencycurrents,suchastheinputcurrent
ontheLTC4099,tendtofindtheirwayonthegroundplane
alongamirrorpathdirectlybeneaththeincidentpathon
thetopoftheboard.Ifthereareslitsorcutsintheground
planeduetoothertracesonthatlayer,thecurrentwillbe
forcedtogoaroundtheslits.Ifhighfrequencycurrentsare
notallowedtoflowbackthroughtheirnaturalleast-area
path,excessivevoltagewillbuildupandradiatedemis-
sionswilloccur(seeFigure9).Thereshouldbeagroupof
viasdirectlyunderthegroundedbacksideleadingdirectly
downtoaninternalgroundplane.Tominimizeparasitic
inductance,thegroundplaneshouldbeascloseaspos-
sibletothetopplaneofthePCboard(layer2).
TheIDGATEpinfortheexternalidealdiodecontrollerhas
extremelylimiteddrivecurrent.Caremustbetakento
minimizeleakagetoadjacentPCboardtraces.100nAof
leakagefromthispinwillintroduceanadditionaloffset
totheidealdiodeofapproximately10mV.Tominimize
leakage,thetracecanbeguardedonthePCboardby
surroundingitwithVOUTconnectedmetal,whichshould
generallybelessthan1VhigherthanIDGATE.
Battery Charger Stability Considerations
TheLTC4099’sbatterychargercontainsbothaconstant-
voltage and a constant-current control loop. The con-
stant-voltage loop is stable without any compensation
whenabatteryisconnectedwithlowimpedanceleads.
Excessiveleadlength,however,mayaddenoughseries
inductancetorequireabypasscapacitorofatleast1F
fromBATtoGND.
