4.4 CONTROLLER INTERFACE
4.4.1 General
The 8502 will connect to any Ethernet controller without
any glue logic provided that the external Ethernet control-
ler has a MII interface that complies with IEEE 802.3.
4.4.2 Output Drivers
The digital outputs on the 8502 MII signals can meet the
external MII driver characteristics specified in IEEE 802.3
and shown in Figure 11 if external 24.9 ohm 1% termina-
tion resistors are added. These termination resistors are
only needed f the outputs have to drive a MII cable or other
transmission line type load, such as in the external MII
applications shown in Figures 7-10. If the 8502 is used in
internal MII applications such as adapter cards or on a
motherboard, then these termination resistors are not
needed, as shown in the schematic in Figure 10.

4.4.3 MII Disable
The MII inputs and outputs can be disabled by setting the
MII disable bit in the MI serial port Control register. When
the MII s disabled, he MII nputs don't respond o any nput
signals and the MII outputs are placed in the high imped-
ance state. The default value of this bit when the device
powers up or is reset is dependent on the device address.
If the device address latched into MDA[1:0] at reset is not
11, it is assumed that the device is being used in applica-
tions where t s the only device on the MII bus, ike adapter
card, and the device powers up with the MII enabled. If the
device address latched into MDA[1:0] at reset is 11, it is
assumed hat he device s being used n application where
many devices could be sharing the same MII bus, like an
external PHY, and the device powers up with the MII
disabled.
