Since the dawn of time man has been fascinated by the
nature of light. Only recently has he discovered light’s
ability to transmit vast quantities of information.
Light is unique. Its behavior is very much like that of a
high frequency electromagnetic wave, yet it also displays
attributes common to particles. It has the ability to trig-
ger interactions between electrons orbiting within mat-
ter, and it is easy to generate, transmit and receive.
With our understanding of these characteristics, and our advance-
ments in electronics, we've begun to harness the enormous po-
tential of light.Here are some examples:
* Advancements in wavelength stability have led to the develop-
ment of lasers with the power to transmit light hundreds of
kilometers over optical fiber, without OE/EO conversion.
* New wavelength multiplexing technology lets us transmit hun-
dreds of terabits of information per second over a single optical
fiber.
* New visible light (red) laser diode storage/retrieval technology
makes it possible to pack several gigabytes of data onto a single
optical disc.
* The optical coupling capabilities of photocouplers and OCMOS
FETs (Solid State Relays) are used in hard-wired transmission
systems to eliminate electrical noise from sources outside the
system.
Today, rapid advancements in optoelectronics parallel another
phenomenon, the Internet. It's no wonder, since the Internet has
given us the ability to share information instantly, with anyone,
anywhere on earth. The volume of data that's generated, stored,
processed and transmitted daily over the Internet is growing at an
extremely rapid rate. NEC Compound Semiconductor Devices
optoelectronic technology is helping to make this possible. Our
optoelectronic semiconductor devices are at work in many of the
transmission, exchange, branching, collection and interface sys-
tems that make up the heart of the Internet. We're proud to be a
