6. A/D Converter Glossary
Resolution
Analog changes that are identifiable with the A/D converter.
If the resolution is 10 bits, the analog voltage can be resolved into 2

= 1024 steps.
Total error
The deviation between the actual and logic value attributable to offset error, gain error, non-linearity error, and
noise.
Linearity error
The deviation between the actual conversion characteristic of the device and the line linking the zero transition
point (“00 0000 0000”
“00 0000 0001”) and the full scale transition point (“11 1111 1110”
“11 1111 1111”).
Differential linearity error
The deviation of input voltage needed to change the output code by 1 LSB from the theoretical value
