brieflydiscussthisendeavorintermsofarchitecturalapproach,hardwareissues,and
softwareissues.
ArchitecturalApproach
TheQUICCisthelogicalextensionoftheTS86302,buttheoverallarchitectureandphi-
losophyoftheTS86302designremainsintactintheQUICC.TheQUICCkeepsthebest
featuresoftheTS86302,whilemakingthechangesrequiredtoprovideforthe
increasedflexibility,integration,andperformancerequestedbycustomers.Becausethe
CPMisprobablythemostdifficultmoduletolearn,anyonewhohasusedtheTS86302
caneasilybecomefamiliarwiththeQUICCsincetheCPMarchitecturalapproach
remainsintact.
ThemostsignificantarchitecturalchangemadeontheQUICCwasthetranslationofthe
designintothestandard68300familyIMBarchitecture,resultinginafasterCPUand
differentsystemintegrationfeatures.
AlthoughthefeaturesoftheSIM60donotexactlycorrespondtothoseoftheTS86302
SIM,theyareverysimilar.
BecauseofthesimilarityoftheQUICCSIM60andCPUtoothermembersofthe68300
family,suchastheTS68332,previoususersofthesedeviceswillbecomfortablewith
thesesamefeaturesontheQUICC.
HardwareCompatibility
Issues
ThefollowinglistsummarizesthehardwaredifferencesbetweentheTS86302andthe
QUICC:
Pinout–Thepinoutisnotthesame.TheQUICChas240pins;theTS86302has
132pins.
Package–BothdevicesofferPGAandPQFPpackages.However,theQUICCQFP
packagehasa20-milpitch;whereas,theTS86302QFPpackagehasa25-mil
pitch.
SystemBus–ThesystembussignalsnowlooklikethoseoftheTS68020as
opposedtothoseofthe68000.Itisstillpossibletointerface68000peripheralsto
theQUICC,utilizingthesametechniquesusedtointerfacethemtoaTS68020.
SystemBusinSlaveMode–AnumberofQUICCpinstakeonnewfunctionalityin
slavemodetosupportanexternalTS68EC040.OntheTS68302,thepinnames
generallyremainedthesameinslavemode.
PeripheralTiming–Theexternaltimingsoftheperipherals(SCCs,timers,etc.)are
verysimilar(ifnotidentical)tocorrespondingperipheralsontheTS68302.
PinAssignments–TheassignmentofperipheralfunctionstoI/Opinsisdifferentin
severalways.First,theQUICCcontainsmoregeneral-purposeparallelI/Opins
thantheTS68302.However,theQUICCoffersmanymorefunctionsthanevena
240-pinpackagewouldnormallyallow,resultinginmoremultifunctionalpinsthan
theTS68302.
