the future. Communication does not
require optical contact with the remote
system, and therefore works through
obstacles, such as walls and brief-
cases.
The maximum speed is 1Mbit/s
(in practice 700kbit/s).
Bluetooth radio uses frequency hop
(1600 times/second), and a spread
spectrum, which divides the frequency
band into a number of channels.
Bluetooth wireless technology
includes security features, such as
built-in encryption.
HARDWARE
The BSK hardware is connected to
the PC via an RS-232 cable or a
USB cable. Power is supplied by a
main adaptor or via the USB cable.
A telephone handset or headset
(included in the kit) can be connected
to the board to make it a short dis-
tance, duplex, radio communication
device.
The design consists of a main
board and a plug in daughter board.
The Bluetooth daughter board can be
removed and plugged into another
(custom) hardware.
There is one on-board antenna as
well as one antenna connector for an
external antenna, for boards that are
built into a casing. A switch on the
board determines which one to use.
The board also has jumpers for
measuring or for re-directing signals
to another board, e.g. an embedded
CPU board.
SOFTWARE
The CD-ROM contains all the soft-
ware and documentation needed to
explore and run the kit:
A Windows application.
Example project with source code.
A USB driver for communicating
with the Bluetooth module on
Microsoft Windows
and 2000.
Supports the following protocol
layers: HCI, L2CAP, RFCOMM,
SDP.
Support the following profiles:
GAP, SDAP, SPP.
98, NT4
