Applications
The AD8321 is primarily intended to be used as the return path
(also called upstream path) driver in cable modem and cable
telephony applications. Data to be transmitted is modulated in
either QPSK or QAM format. This is done either in DSP or by a
dedicated QPSK/QAM modulator such as the AD9853.
The amplifier receives its input signal either from the dedicated
QPSK/QAM modulator or from a DAC. In both cases, the signal
must be low-pass filtered before being applied to the line driving
amplifier.
The amplifier drives the line through a diplexer. The insertion
loss of a diplexer is typically -3dB. As a result the line driver
must deliver a power level roughly 3dB greater than required by
the applicable cable modem standard so that diplexer losses are
canceled out.
Because the distance to the central office varies from subscriber
to subscriber, signals from
different subscribers will be attenuated by differing amounts. As
a result, the line driver is required to vary its gain so that all
signals arriving at the central office have the same amplitude.
Basic Connection
Figure 2 shows the basic schematic for operating the AD8321 in
single-ended non-inverting mode. Because the amplifier operates
from a single supply, the differential inputs must be ac-coupled
using 0.1uF capacitors (the differential input pins have a bias
level of approximately V
/2). For operation in the non-inverting
mode, The Vin- pin should be tied to ac ground via a 0.1uF
capacitor with the input signal being fed to the AD8321 through
the (ac-coupled) Vin+ pin. To operate in inverting mode, simply
switch the connections to Vin+ and Vin-, (i.e. the input signal
should be fed in through Vin- and Vin+ should be ac-coupled to
ground). Inverting mode should be chosen if the AD8321 is being
used as a drop-in replacement for the AD8320.
