Motion Sensing in a Flexible Design
ZiLOG’s ZSBI2010 Passive InfraRed Amplifier offers
improved motion detection in security systems and
control applications for home and commercial use.
Designed as an easy-to-use front-end gain compo-
nent, the ZSBI010 is a highly integrated mixed-sig-
nal solution that ensures fast time-to-market,
reduced design time, and interface flexibility to
external circuitry or a microcontroller. The ZSBI010
also offers high reliability and reduced manufactur-
ing time in an 8-pin package, ideal for applications
where board space is critical.
The ZSBI010 is a low-power monolithic mixed-sig-
nal integrated circuit that features a simple single-
bit system consisting of a first-order sigma-delta
modulator, an up/down ADC counter, and a digital-
to-analog converter. The flexible ZSBI010 also
offers a built-in adjustable digital filter and user-
configurable gain that are controlled using external
resistors. An Auto Zero Feedback system provides
higher performance, and the low-power CMOS
supports longer battery life.
A Simple Model
A simple conceptual model of the PIR Amplifier cir-
cuit is comprised of an amplifier and a bandpass
filter. By connecting a digital integrator in a nega-
tive feedback loop to form an Auto-Zero Feedback
system, PIR signals can be referred to VREF, which
provides a baseline for an external window com-
parator or other detection circuitry.
Easy Configuration
The differential high-gain operational amplifier
allows the user to configure the overall PIR system-
gain bandwidth and to complete the negative feed-
back loop with external components.
Typically, the gain is configured in the range
60-70 dB. A 120-dB open-loop gain provides the
user with sufficiently low gain error, which can be
less than 5% for gains up to 72 dB.
