Hardware Overview
The TPS2370EVM HPA015 EVM features the TPS2370 from by Texas
Instruments. The EVM is designed to look exactly like the front end of any
power over ethernet (PoE) powered device (PD) module. An RJ-45 connector
is provided to connect directly to an ethernet cable having a power sourcing
equipment (PSE) driving it on the other end. The EVM also has the capability
of being powered by a stand alone power supply.
According to the IEEE 802.3af specification, the PD module must provide the
circuitry needed for detection by the PSE as it polls the ethernet links. The
IEEE 802.3af specification has an option for the PD to provide classification
as to the amount of power needed by the PD module. The TPS2370EVM
HPA015 EVM along with the TPS2370 provide all the necessary hardware for
detection and classification by the PSE.
The TPS2370EVM HPA015 EVM has connections (J7 and J8) for hooking up
an external dc/dc converter, which converts the 48 V down to the voltages
needed for the ethernet module.
The EN_DC output is used to enable an external dc/dc converter with an active
high enable. For a dc/dc converter with an active low enable, Q2 on the
HPA015 can be used to invert the EN_DC output.
The TPS2370EVM HPA015 EVM layout supports both an SOIC 8-pin device
and an SOIC 8-pin socket. U1 on the schematic refers to the socket, and U2
refers to the device.
Note:
Only one or the other is used. The TPS2370EVM HPA015 EVM comes from
the factory with the SOIC 8-pin device installed.
The TPS2370EVM HPA015 EVM is designed to support a voltage source on
both the data lines (pins 1 & 2 and pins 3 & 6) and the spare lines (pins 4 & 5
and 7 & 8) of the RJ-45 connector (J2). The polarity of the voltage source on
the data lines is interchangeable. However, the polarity of the voltage source
on the spare lines must adhere to the most positive voltage being placed on
pins 4 & 5, and the most negative voltage placed on pins 7 & 8.
