TheSP508isamonolithicdevicethatsupportseight(8)popularserialinterfacestandardsfor
WideAreaNetwork(WAN)connectivity.TheSP508isfabricatedusingalowpowerBiCMOS
processtechnology,andincorporatesanExarregulatedchargepumpallowing+5Vonly
operation.Exar'spatentedchargepumpprovidesaregulatedoutputof+5.8V,whichwill
provideenoughvoltageforcompliantoperationinallmodes.Eight(8)driversandeight(8)
receivers can be configured via software for any of the above interface modes at any time.
TheSP508requiresnoadditionalexternalcomponentsforcompliantoperationforallofthe
eight(8)modesofoperationotherthanfourcapacitorsusedfortheinternalchargepump.
AllnecessaryterminationisintegratedwithintheSP508andisswitchablewhenV.35drivers
andV.35receivers,orwhenV.receiversareused.TheSP508providesthecontrolsand
transceiveravailabilityforoperatingaseitheraDTEorDCE.
AdditionalfeatureswiththeSP508includeinternalloopbackthatcanbeinitiatedinanyofthe
operatingmodesbyuseoftheLOOPBACKpin.Whileinloopbackmode,receiveroutputs
areinternallyconnectedtodriverinputscreatinganinternalsignalpathbypassingtheserial
communicationscontrollerfordiagnostictesting.TheSP508alsoincludesalatchenablepin
withthedriverandreceiveraddressdecoder.TheinternalV.orV.35receivertermination
canbeswitchedoffusingacontrolpin(TERM_OFF)formonitoringapplications.Alleight
(8)driversandreceiversintheSP508includeseparateenablepinsforaddedconvenience.
