2. The RCD termination
The traditional solution to properly match each line of the bus consists of the use of several discrete
resistances,capacitorsand smallschottkydiodes.For a 16-bitbus, thisrequires48 discretecomponents.
SGS-THOMSONoffers an innovatingsolutionwith a monolithicstructureusing
ASD
TM
technology(*).
The
ASD
TM
technologyenablestointegratemonolithically16 oftheseRCD ”basiccells”ontoa singlechip
device. The
RCD16-47B
reduces component cost and assembly cost, saves board space and improves
reliability.
Thesimulationillustratesthe signal distortionproducedbylinereflectionat the endof thelinewhen sucha
terminationis used.
The resistorprovidesthe pathterminationfor PCBtrack, thusresulting in low reflectionphenomena.
The capacitor of 33 pF blocks DC currents while acting as a shortcircuit during signal transitions,and
holdsthe bus at the lastlogiclevel. It reducespower consumptionandavoidsexcessivecurrent.
The smallSchottkydiodeclampsthe negativeremainingundershoots whichcan resultfrom impedance
mismatch.This damps negative voltages and preventsthe logic signal from rising above the logic level
’0’ thresholdafter a falling edge.
TheRCD terminationprovidesoptimalsolutioncomparedto all otherterminationtechniques.
