Typical Application
Figure 7 shows the recommended connections for
the PLD08 series converter.
Fig.7 Typical application of PLD08 series
The PLD series converters do require external
input and output capacitors for proper operation.
A minimum of a 100ìF(xiàn) capacitor with an ESR
<0.1
is to be connected to the input and to each
of the outputs of the PLD08 series. Note that each
output also requires a minimum current of 0.2A for
proper functioning.
If the magnitude of the inrush current needs to be
limited,
see
the
“Inrush
Current
Control
Application Note” on www.power-one.com.
For output decoupling, it is recommended using
small
ceramic
capacitors
connected
directly
across the output pins of the converter. Note that
the capacitors do not substitute the filtering
required by the load.
Shutdown Feature Description
The ON/OFF pin in the PLD08 series converters,
functions as a normal soft shutdown.
It is
referenced to the GND pin (see Figure 7). When
the ON/OFF pin is pulled low to within 0.4 V of
ground, the outputs are turned off and the unit
goes into a very low input power mode.
(Isn’t this the on/off pin above?)When the pin is
left floating or pulled high to Vin, the unit is ON
and operates normally.
An open collector switch is recommended to
control the voltage between the ON/OFF pin and
the GND pin of the converter. The ON/OFF pin is
pulled up internally, so no external voltage source
is required. The user should avoid connecting
a resistor between the ON/OFF pin and the
+Vin pin.
When the ON/OFF pin is used to achieve remote
control, the user must take care to insure that the
pin reference for the control is really the GND pin.
The control signal must not be referenced ahead
of EMI filtering, or remotely from the unit.
Optically coupling the information and locating the
optical coupler directly at the module will solve
any of these problems.
Output Voltage Trim
The trim feature allows the user to adjust each of
the output voltages by +/-10% from the nominal
(except the 3.3V input with 2.5V output model).
This can be used to compensate distribution
drops,
perform
margining
in
production,
or
accommodate other requirements when output
voltage needs to be adjusted from the nominal.
The Trim Function
The trim mechanism for the PLD08 series is a
negative one. Each of the outputs trims up with a
resistor from the TRIM pin to the GND pin and
trims down with a resistor from the TRIM pin to
the respective +Vout pin.
