FIFO REGISTER
DESCRIPTION
The
HCC40105B
(extended temperature range) and
HCF40105B
(intermediate temperature range) are
monolithicintegratedcircuits,available in16-leaddual
in-line plastic or ceramic package.
The
HCC/HCF40105B
is alow-power first-in-first-out
(FIFO)”elastic” storageregisterthatcanstore164-bit
words. It is capable of handling input and output data
atdifferentshiftingrates.Thisfeaturemakesitparticu-
larly useful as a buffer between asynchronous sys-
tems. Each word position in theregister is clocked by
a control flip-flop, which storesa markerbit. A”1” sig-
nifiesthattheposition’s data isfilledanda”0” denotes
a vacancy in thatposition. The control flip-flopdetects
thestate of the preceding flip-flop and communicates
itsownstatustothesucceeding flip-flop.When acon-
trol flip-flop is in the ”0” state and sees a ”1” in the
preceding flip-flop, it generates a clock pulse that
transfers data from the preceding four data latches
intoitsownfour datalatches andresetsthe preceding
flip-flop to ”0”. The firstand lastcontrol flip-flops have
buffered outputs. Since all empty locations ”bubble”
automatically tothe input end, and all valid data ripple
through tothe output end,thestatusofthefirstcontrol
flip-flop (DATA-INREADY) indicates iftheFIFOisfull,
and the status of the last flip-flop (DATA-OUT

earliest dataare removed fromthe bottomofthe data
stack(theoutputend), all data entered later willauto-
matically propagate (ripple) toward the output.
