Thermal Considerations
Austin Power Modules are rated to operate in ambient tem-
peratures from –40°C to 80°C. The derating curves below are
provided as design aids for proper application of the power
modules. To insure adequate cooling, the module tempera-
ture should be measured in the system configuration. Ideally,
temperature will be measured using an infrared temperature
probe (such as the FLUKE 80T-IR) or imaging system under
the maximum ambient temperature and the minimum air flow
conditions. Diode and FET case temperatures measured on
the top surface’s hottest spot should not exceed 105 °C. An
alternative method of measuring temperature is the use of
thermocouples. For best results, a small thermocouple
should be attached to the leads of each FET and diode using
a small amount of cyanoacrylate adhesive.
