The Proper Installation
Procedure for the Quality
Assured Connection
The proper installation of termi-
nals, splices and connectors is
very important to the efficient
performance of an electrical sys-
tem. The properly installed con-
nector will allow good conductivi-
ty through the termination. A
poor termination results in a high
resistance connection. A poor
connector installation may cause
damage or failure of an entire
system. Certain basic require-
ments must be met to make a good
termination.
1.
Before the connector or
terminal is installed on the con-
ductor, follow these recom-
mended practices:
Strip the insulation care-
fully so as to avoid nicking or
cutting conductor strands
Strip the insulation to the
proper length so that the con-
ductors can be inserted fully
into the connector barrel; the
wire/cable should be visible in
the inspection hole of the lug;
the proper strip length can be
found on page 49D.

strippers will help eliminate
these
prob-
lems
by
prop-
erly
gaging
and
mea-
suring
the depth and
length requirements for the
conductor. See page 44D for
wire strippers.
Performance Data
Voltage Drop Test 500 Cycles
Thomas & Betts terminals show consistently lower millivolt drops than those allowed by NEMA speci-
fication.
Wire Pullout Tension Test
Thomas & Betts terminals show consistently higher wire retention forces than those required by NEMA
specification.
